How our interviews work – and why we do them

Interviews can be stressful – especially if you don’t know what to expect. To help you understand what to expect, we’ve put together an overview of our hiring process. Alongside the practical details you’ll also find the reasons behind some parts of the process, what you can do to be better prepared and what to expect once the process concludes.

What to expect in the interview

At the start you’ll exchange a few emails or video calls, then complete a take‑home assignment and finally come for an on‑site interview. You can find more about the details of our selection process here.

Who we’re looking for

People who thrive here are naturally curious, able to think broadly and apply context, and not afraid to collaborate. They’re comfortable with numbers and enjoy logic, but even more important to us are openness, team spirit, healthy ambition and the ability to accept feedback.

A few useful tips

  • Take a systematic approach to the tasks.
  • Talk through what you’re thinking and how you’re approaching the problem – we’re testing your way of thinking, not just whether you get the “right” answer.
  • If someone in the interview points you in the right direction, take the hint.
  • Don’t be afraid to make a mistake; you can always go back and fix it.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions – especially “why”.

Remember: we’re not trying to trip you up, we’re here to support you. We want to discover what you can do just as much as what isn’t your strength. Only by fully understanding your abilities will we know whether you belong with us and where. A friendly, curious approach will get you far.

Interview with Saša Helánová from HR

Hi, I’m Saša; I work at Qminers as Chief of People and I’ll guide you through our entire hiring process.

What should I expect from the hiring process at Qminers?

After you submit your application, either I or a colleague from HR support will get in touch within a few days. If you advance to the next round, you’ll hear about it promptly – and similarly, you'll be informed if we won't be moving forward with your application. We don’t leave anyone in limbo. After a screening call comes a technical screening, a take‑home assignment and finally a half‑day interview with the team lead and key future colleagues. It might sound like a lot, but it isn’t that bad. Every step has a solid rationale and leads to what both we and the candidates want: to find the best person for the role where they’ll fulfill their potential.

Can I do an internship with you?

We don’t offer classic multi‑week internships, and we have good reasons for that. An intern would have to work with mock data and, in just a few weeks, would barely scratch the surface of our actual work. However, we do offer shorter contracts and are very flexible. Several of our colleagues combine working here with pursuing their university degrees. If someone is determined to join us, they will find a path – and they don’t need to worry about lacking experience. We’ll teach them everything they need.

Can I apply for more than one position or team?

Absolutely. We look at candidates’ profiles as a whole and can often make a good estimate of which team they would fit best. A candidate can apply for any open position that interests them and there’s space in the application to indicate preferences – but we’ll also consider them for other roles.

Any tips on how to prepare for the interview? And what happens if a candidate passes?

Going through the materials on our website definitely helps. Candidates will find general information about interviews for each team as well as sources and literature recommended by our team leads. For students, it’s a big plus if we see good grades, participation in international competitions, or if they organize maths or programming seminars or hackathons. We also want every serious candidate to be driven by the ambition to achieve something.

For the selection itself it’s good to have a bit of free time; if you pass the initial rounds, there’s a take‑home assignment and it’s useful to be able to start on it right away. After that everything moves quickly, within weeks. On successful completion of the process we’ll make an offer and start talking about a start date. If a candidate is still studying, we can agree, for example, to delay the start until after finals.

Can I apply again if I’ve applied before?

Yes! Some of our valued colleagues were hired after their second attempt. If you do apply again, think about whether something was missing from your CV last time – projects, experience, outputs from school or practice. In general it makes sense to try again after about a year, when you’ve had time to pick up new skills.

People say that at Qminers you really work hard.

That’s true – but only during working hours. We don’t want people to take work home; we respect their privacy and personal lives. The pace is fast, but it makes sense and produces quick results. No slow corporate processes. Even our CEO Petr Zahradnik works directly with the teams, putting in the same effort as everyone else, and leadership is always in the loop on what everyone is working on.

Do you employ people from abroad?

Yes, international candidates take part in our hiring process. All our documentation and task management is in English.
